Pain Patients Shouldn't "Tough It Out"

Many pain patients will try and "tough it out" rather than be perceived as complaining. In this video, Dr. Portenoy recommends that patients who have difficulty expressing their pain bring a family member to the doctor's visit. "That individual can provide a completely different spin on the patient's life," says Dr. Portenoy. "That's real information that can be used to develop a plan."

I am alone, divorced. So it would be tough to find anyone who recently knows what I go through pain wise.I have an appt and I rarely open up, I think it is because I assume ppl do not care. Wrong ,no doubt.I think at my next appt I will ask my Doctor for some ideas as to better deal with the pain. He says that the new med, Cimzia, isn't supposed to stop the pain, but the progression of the RA.I am allergic to so many analgesics it doesn't leave one with many alternatives.

I agree with what was said. I know I don't relate to my doctor the reality of what I'm going through at home. After hearing this video, I am going to make an appointment with my doctor on a day when my husband can accompany me.
