I've been on it for 12 yrs now, 900 mg a day. I started to reduce it to 600 mg and my hand started shake so bad I can't write. I had spinal cord repair in 2000 & I'm thinking I need to increase instead of decrease.

I had been on 600mg for 10 years or longer. I could tell a little bit at the beginning that it was helping. I was also taking it for bipolar which really helped that. I am no longer taking it because it just quit working and also kept gaining weight. I have to say to that I am on lots of meds do to my health. Many cause constipation and other side affects. Some days are just to terrible and makes me want to give up. It's a constant battle just getting up in the mornings from the pain and depression. I also had a tumor removed from my spine in 08.If you are taking the Neurontin and you aren't noticing a change I would say your wasting your money.

I was up to 1,500 mgs. a day, and it did nothing for me, except make me gain weight. I started out at 300 mgs. and they worked me up to that, next step was 1,800 mgs. a day, my pharmacy told me, if it's not working - "Stop taking it, it's only making you gain weight." It works great for some people, it just didn't do anything for me, and not everyone gains weight from it, I believe it depends on the chemistry in our systems.

I took neurontin for my seizures years ago. I did not like it. I got toxic on it and ended up in the hospital. I know it works for some people whatever the reason they take it. I personally have a low tolerance foe medicine.

I take Neurontin and it really helps my back pain, that is it helps me to relax and not be as tense, but I take other narcotic pain meds as well. but overall I like the neurontin, it really helps me.

I have both Arthritis and Fibromyyalgia, I took both the drugs nuerontin and lyrica. I'm allergic to both…extremely so. All I can take is mucsle relaxers and meds for my arthritis and pain pills. I hate to, but I get in so much pain sometimes I just need to take the pain pilss. Any suggestions other than pain pills? It's what my Doctor gives me, he says it's all that will work for me. He's an Internal Med. Dr. Should I find a Arthitis Dr.? Valentine Lady P.S. I just joined your site yesterday.

I was put on a trial of Neurontin for my sciatic nerve pain prior to my lumbar fusion, but it didn't seem to help at all. I've also been put on Lyrica, which is supposed to help with the nerve pain, but it didn't either. The only thing that helped was the surgery. The problem with these medications is that they (like the narcotics), mask the pain and can cause further damage because you don't know when you're overdoing it. Masking nerve pain can cause permanent nerve damage and a condition known as "drop foot" if the nerve that is damaged is in your spine or your leg. It causes you to drag your foot and can cause frequent falls. For those that it does help, please remember that.

I used this medicine for about 6 months and it just stopped working for me. I don't know if it was a case of my system starting to reject it or like what happens to me with a lot of medications is I build up an immunity to it and it just quicks working or doesn't work as well. Other than that it was a good medication for relieving my chronic pain from neck surgery. Too bad it just didn't work out for me. I've learned though that if I don't try something I'll never knoew if it'll help me, so I often refer to myself as the "guinea pig" for new medications for pain relief when they come out. My doctor's usually get a good chuckle out of that line about being a guinea pig. :-)

In my experience, this drug will not help stiffness. For that is where the anti-inflamitories are used. I use gabapentin both for neurapathy and for restless leg syndrome(RLS). but, the RLS seems to go hand in hand with the Fibro also, in which I have, It have seemed to help my pain level. But, I am also on several other drugs also. Pain, muscles relaxers, anti-inflatories, vit.d, vit b12, synthroid, etc. So many things seem to go hand-in-hand with fibro.

Pros

If part or most of your pain is due to nerve damage, this is one of several drugs that will relieve the pain. I have pain in my elbow, knee, ankle, and lower back. I've been taking this drug for a short time. So far, so good.

Cons

This drug can make you dizzy at first. There are other side effects as well just like any other drug. I notice that it doesn't work on my stiffness. Also, this drug is also used as an anti-seizure medication, which freaked me out at first. However, it is used for many other illnesses also, such as diabetic neuropathy.
