At least once a day some of my joints will itch madly!! I have RA, OA, Degenerative Disc Disease and possibly Post Polio/Fibromyalgia. Does anyone else experience the itching? Thanks for any help.

This post is pretty old, but I feel a duty to report my findings. I had this issue when I started taking Arava. I loved how good I felt, but the itching made me feel insane. It was like the itching came from inside the joints. I tried everything to dull the itch to no avail. The only new thing going on in my life at the time was the Arava. Once I quit taking it, the itching stopped. I believe it took about two full days for the worst of the itching to stop and the rest subsided within a few more days.

I also get fits of itchiness! I find that cocoa butter is best when this happens.

I have the same symptoms, but my Dr. prescribes Hydroxizine for the itching and with my pain medicines I sometimes take more than I'm supposed to.

I care for my significant other who is affected daily with one form or another of arthritis. When its his RA that is flaring he often complains of itching in his wrists and feet. This can be a real problem for him as everything is painful to the touch. Trying to lightly apply a soothing body lotion is impossible. If possible you might try to apply a topical cream such as cortaid or try bebedryl to see if this might help. Mine won't even try thr oral benedryl…I guess thats the stubborness of a man! lol Maybe even soaking in a soothing bath [perhaps oatmeal] Thats about all I can offer for possible solutions but relate to what you are saying. Hopefully…someday…hopefully they will find a cure because I have seen first hand how debilitating this can be.

Welcome Albertwoman to Arthritis Connect. I am glad you joined us here.

I have itching too with my RA and FMS. The worst of it is at night and when at home resting so I usually know when I am going to have a bad night. Benadryl before bed helps but take it early in the evening so you do not oversleep if you have to be up in the morning. My doctor suspects Sjogrens syndrome. Aside from the meds you are all ready taking, drink plenty of water to keep your skin, eyes, and other membranes from drying out. You can use eye drops and saline nose drops.

Again, welcome and please feel free to contact me with any quetsions you may have.

Wow Lana I have not come across anyone who has Sjogren syndrom. I was diagnosed n 2000. It is believed that Arthritis is secondary to Sjogren at least that is what I was told. Recently I have been itching alot around my collar bone. At first I thought it was an allergic reaction to a new cervical collar I was wearing so I stopped wearing it. But then I noticed a subtle change n structure of my collar bone. I have an extreme amount of neck pain. My Doc say the itching maybe pinched nerves, I have a few of those. Present meds: Enbrel, Arava, Lidoderm patches, Codeine without the tylenol (trying to spare my liver); muscle relaxers ( I take the meds as needed) not big on taking pain meds; but I get plenty of fiber to avoid the constipation. My C4-C6 r pretty bad, awake with headaches most morning, sometimes with dizziness…but I guess its all n days living:-)

Hi! I also get itchy joints, but it usually happens when my joints are about to swell up. It happens mainly in my fingers. My finger will start to itch/burn like I have been bit by a bug, but there is no bite mark. Then my finger will swell up like a little sausage. The only thing that seems to help is to put ice on it. But the swelling, burning and itching stay for about a day. Ive been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus and fibromyalgia. The only meds I am on right now are pain meds as I have no insurance. Fun times. I am managing by trying to keep the stress in my life as little as possible, getting LOTS of sleep/rest, and eating well. Until I get health insurance its the best I can do.

The tops of my feet and around ankles itch like crazy but only after I take off shoes and socks for the evening. Sometimes I scratch so hard I find a bruise the next day. This itching will happen for several days and then I'm ok for awhile. I don't know why it does this. Never thought about it being RA related. Think I will have to do some research now.

I have the itching too. Some nights my feet and hands will itch so bad I think it will drive me crazy. My first Rhuematologist said I had tested positive for a connective tissue disorder. I take Plaquenil but it doesn't help with the itch. Any help or ideas are appreciated.

I too have itchy joints, in my hands and feet only …so far. The only thing that helps is ice or very cold water. It does'nt stop my joints from swelling but it really does releave the itch. May you (we) all be blessed with pain free days and nights. The pain that goes with RA is unbelievable!!! I was told I had RA at about 42 yrs. Really did not know what it was back then, but I do now. I'm 61 now. I have had horrible flares lately. Today, right now, I don't feel too bad, and for that I am thankful.
