Arthritis in my feet

Hello , I was wondering if anyone has any advice for arthritis in feet. I've had it for about 6 years, it is only now that I find that I need to use a walking stick if I'm on my feet longer than half hour. I take prescription anti-inflammatorys, but unfortunately the pain is always there and I have trouble trying to walk normally … I feel so silly. My esr is raised and the rh factor is borderline at this stage but I've been told that it is climbing. I know that many of you are in absolute severe pain but I was hoping that you might still have some advice.

Hello mum:), I to have arthritis in my feet and the one thing that has helped me so far is my tens unit and the heat from my electric blanket. There are times when my feet ache terribly and that has helped me so far. Hope you get relief soon and keep us informed.

If it nots RA then what does your rheumy think it is? I spent a lot of time with the podiatrist too. But an ultra sound showed a neuroma plus possible start of neurofibromatosis, no fat pads left in my heals and synovitis. At times I get really frustrated and disappointed with my feet! Hope you find some relief.

Have you had the DNA test for HLA-B27? The types of arthritis associated with this gene commonly affect the feet and make it painful to walk. My arthritis is really bad in my feet, toes and ankles. I can't walk barefoot so I wear uggs a lot, the warmth of the boots feels good. If the pain is really bad I put Tiger Balm on the painful areas, OTC at the pharmacy.

I have not even heard of this test , do I just ask my Dr to do it ? I can hardly believe you wear uggs cos that is exactly what I do! During the day u wear allegria shoes but by 5 pm I'm desperate for my uggs … The comfort is amazing. Thanks for your advice.

Hi holly, never heard of this test. I have arthritis in my feet too and find it painful to walk on as well. I was told it could be planter faciitis that could be causing it, but not 100% sure, think sometime drs just fob you off.

Shirlwain that's what I was told at first. It wasn't till they did an ultrasound that they discovered 5 diff problems. May be you should ask for one ?

I have got arthritis in both my feet very bad I also cannot walk very far without pain and I wear boots most of the time or sketchers in the summer and that's all I can choose from because they help the pain. But 4 years ago I had both feet fused which is a metal plate at one side and pins on the other side of the foot. I still have good movement in my feet and they are less painfull but I couldn't say it's gone altogether but it's better than they were.

Hi Dianne, you have been thru a lot ! I was told that they could operate but only 30% chance of success but high chance that I would be left with a limp. So I decided not to have surgery.

I had terrible pain on the upper part of my feet, due to RA. I could hardly walk anymore. After using Humira and Methotrexate it is completely gone.

I had bloods done recently and they said that the rh factor is betting high but two points off being positive for RA. So I don't know if the level will keep rising or not. My Dr said to try other meds first before methotrexate, what is Humirs?

Humira is what they call a Biological. TNF blokker. It is complicated and it would be best to Google it to understand. For many people with RA it has been a lifesaver.

Hi, Mum, thanks for answering. I guess we started off with the same diagnosis. All I know is this is some very BAD pain —- I guess I'll get some answers soon. I've been seeing a podiatrist for a year but I'm not sure she knows what to do about my problem so someone gave me the name of another doctor in a neighboring town who is supposed to be very good. I'll try to let you know what they say…although I don't have an appn't yet but I will be calling tomorrow to make one. Might be a while though—-sometimes takes some time for new patients. I know chances are we don't have exactly the same thing but maybe it can be of some help. I'm thinking the inflammation is causing swelling & that might be putting pressure on some nerves. My Rheims told me that there is such a thing as tarsal tunnel which is like carpal tunnel & I had that in both wrists. Had to have surgery 10 yrs ago. I'm starting to notice that a lot of people with RA also have nerve issues. Wonder why? Got I go…watching the Super Bowl. TTYL

Hi kitten purr Good luck with those shots at least they froze your foot with spray first. They didn't do that for me. I really hope they continue to help you. Have they said whether there is a limit to how may you can have?

That was my former Podiatrist that gave me that one. Now, there's a doctor in the sister office that I go to, and he wants to do shots in the elbow, and the knees, It is my guess the elbow, b/c it's the middle of where nerve damage is from my hand to my neck, I don't know for sure- I know there is a limit on some types of shots, and some over a long period can cause more problems, I am not sure what this doctor wants to inject into me. I know it's not Humira, or those types, I think 2 are some type of filler, and the others would be steriods, or cortisones.

I have osteo everywhere- from the neck to the the toes. My bones are separating in my knees, and they are deterioarating. The toes are bad, and have spurs coming off them, and the nerve pinches and compresses. One doctor wants to snip the nerves, but being diabetic, I am not so sure that would be a wise choice. Being diabetic- makes things harder- like for example, no hot showers, no foot soaks, no hot baths, so…and a hot shower feels better, after a combo of meds that I have. We just have to be very careful with the feet, no lotion between the toes, just so much of a world that I am not use to yet. A lot of changes, some I haven't accomplished yet.

Hi gam my foot troubles were also diag as plantar fasciitis but then it became clear that there was much more trouble. I had steroid inj between the toe bones but with no relief. Also changed all my shoes. I really feel for you hope you can get some answers soon … And relief too. I find it hard b/c my family can't understand just how painful it is. They try tho.

I was just told to take a paper bag, doused it with apple cider vinegar, wrap your foot with it, leave it on overnite, you can use a plastic bag over it so it wont mess up your bed. It takes away the pain for a long time.

I was just about to post something very similar to this. I am very curious to see if anyone else has trouble with their feet. My problem which was diagnosed as plantar fasciitis, has been with me for a year now. The doctor says it is not RA b/c there is no joint where this excruciating pain is on the bottom of the foot. However, it is inflammation & is treated with steroid injections. I have had 4 injections so far, do exercises, only wear tennis shoes, and use ice. A few weeks ago, it seemed like it was finally beginning to get better. I just couldn't overdo it (meaning I couldn't do a lot of walking) or it would start burning & hurting. A few days ago, it came back full force but worst—-instead of hurting just in the middle, the entire bottom of the foot burns and hurts and all of the toes ache, are swollen & burn. I don't have to walk with a cane but it is painful to walk. Monday I will be calling for an appn't with the podiatrist b/c now I'm thinking there is also something else wrong. I was just wondering if anyone here has problems with their feet and, if so, what types of problems. This is very painful. Appreciate your feedback! P.S. Don't feel silly and I hope you feel better soon!

I do have arthritis in my feet. I use a product that is a creme & you
just rub it on, the relief lasts a very long time for me. This product
is called Sports Creme & can be gotten in the U.S. at some drug stores.
It is in-expensive, smells pleasant, doesn't burn, sting, freeze. I hope
this helps you. Hugs, marieanne -

I have it in the ankle on one foot, and in some toes on the other, and now spurs are growing from it, they are compressing the nerve, and when it pinches, it will take you down. They cramp, have shooting stabbing pains in them, and I know I can feel it starting in the big toes now- both ankles are weak, I had the shot that only lasted 3 weeks, it hurt right at the end, they froze the foot with some spray, but at the end, the shot hurt. I haven't had any more shots, I do need them.
